		The hard question about handling class types is: how do you determine&nbsp;template argument equivalence? Class types can define their own equality. 		The other problem is we need&nbsp;<code>==</code>&nbsp;to really be&nbsp;strong&nbsp;enough. One very easy problem to run into in this space is violating the One Definition Rule (ODR). One essential, core requirement for templates is that instantiating the&nbsp;same&nbsp;template with the&nbsp;same&nbsp;arguments has to yield the&nbsp;same&nbsp;code.

		For many years, members of the C++ working group, WG21, have tried to add support for contract assertions &mdash; preconditions, postconditions, and assertion statements within a function body &mdash; to the C++ language. It&rsquo;s been a long and difficult road, but we now have a proposal (P2900, &ldquo;Contracts for C++&rdquo;) to add significant contract support in, we hope, C++26, with more complete support to follow in C++29.
	
		Looking back, the contracts feature has been unusually difficult and contentious. I contend that the difficulty is inherent in the feature: a contracts facility, by its nature,&nbsp; cannot be understood from any single point of view.
	
		In this lecture, I will explain why understanding contracts requires seeing the feature from a panoply of perspectives, and show how shifting between these perspectives allows one to make effective use of the facility.
	
		This lecture is derived from presentations made to the Language Evolution subgroup of WG21 at the St. Louis meeting in June 2024.

In 2023 we introduced a staggered term for directors. Of our 7 directors, there are 4 positions currently open, with each position serving for two years.
Decisions around the 2025 officer roles will be made during the meeting of the new board. You don’t need to specify which position you are nominating for.
As you know, the Board guides the direction of the marketing, governance and outreach activities of the Django community. We provide funding, resources, and guidance to Django events on a global level. Further we provide support to the Django community with an established Code of Conduct and make decisions and enforcement recommendations for violations. We work with our corporate and individual members to raise funds to help support our great community.
In order for our community to continue to grow and advance the Django Web framework, we need your help. The <a href="/foundation/#board">Board of Directors</a> consists of seven volunteers who are elected to two year terms. This is an excellent opportunity to help advance Django. We can’t do it without volunteers, such as yourself. Anyone including current Board members, DSF Members, or the public at large can apply to the Board. It is open to all.

		The C++ community has long been interested in reflection, and we have made significant progress in adding core reflection capabilities to the language. While there is emerging clarity on the querying side of reflection&mdash;inspecting existing code artifacts programmatically&mdash;there is considerably less consensus on the generative aspect: using reflection insights to emit new code. As a result, current proposals showcase a stark contrast between well-polished reflection query capabilities and limited code generation capabilities.
	
		Reifying only the reflection of preexisting code in an Ouroboros manner leads to a curious circularity that hinders the synthesis of new artifacts. This talk provides examples that demonstrate the necessity of generative capabilities in reflection and discusses current and upcoming proposals for generative extensions in C++ reflection.

	Andrei Alexandrescu is a Principal Research Scientist at NVIDIA. He wrote three best-selling books on programming (Modern C++ Design, C++ Coding Standards, and The D Programming Language) and numerous articles and papers on wide-ranging topics from programming to language design to Machine Learning to Natural Language Processing to fundamental algorithms. JavaOne is nearly upon us and we’ve been working hard to fill out the list of final activities. Here’s a high-level Run of Show to give you a sense for what you can expect from the first JavaOne in 5 years. Note that the JavaOne conference is co-located with CloudWorld, so I will mix in a few notable things like the CloudWorld keynotes and the Steve Miller Band. Rock on!

With the August 2024 update of JMS, the Oracle Management Agent (OMA) installation process for JMS is more streamlined and user-friendly thanks to improvements in the installer. This post will highlight the benefits of this new installer and provide detailed steps to set up your systems to be managed by JMS.

The new installer bundle makes installing OMA seamless, efficient, and user-friendly.

A critical pre-requisite for running OMA effectively is having a Java installation that is independent of the system Java. The management agent should NOT rely on a shared Java Runtime.

The new installer addresses this requirement by including its own JDK 8. For users who don’t have a JDK 8 installation already, this eliminates the extra step of installing it. For those that already have a JDK 8 installation, it avoids the temptation of using a JDK not dedicated to the agent.

By bundling JDK 8 with the installer, the installation process becomes more reliable. Users no longer need to worry about installing the right JDK 8 update release, compatibility issues, or manual setup errors. The installer takes care of everything, providing a streamlined and error-free installation and, later, updates.

The automated setup saves significant time for users, allowing them to deploy OMA quickly and efficiently. This is particularly beneficial in environments where multiple agents need to be installed across various systems.

By incorporating these improvements, the new installer ensures a smoother, faster, and more reliable installation process, leading to better performance and user satisfaction.

Before proceeding with the installation, ensure the following:

your Oracle Cloud Infrastructure environment is set up correctly

 to allow communication between all required components and cloud services.

Users wanting to manage Java workloads in OCI using JMS Fleets should follow the 

instructions for setting up Oracle Cloud Agents in OCI systems

Step 1: Download the Installer from JMS Fleets

From the JMS console in OCI, navigate to the Fleet Details page and 

 for your operating system and architecture.

The installer bundle (.tar.gz or .zip depending on the target Operating System)

 can also be downloaded programmatically using the JMS Fleets API.

Step 2: Transfer to Host and Extract the Installer Bundle

Transfer both the downloaded installer bundle and the 

 file to the host(s) you want to monitor using JMS Fleets.

Ensure both files are placed in the same directory on the host machine(s). This is crucial for the installer to function correctly.

Extract the contents of the bundle on the host(s). The package will include:

The installation can be configured using parameters in the 

 for detailed instructions on setting these parameters.

Navigate to the directory containing the extracted bundle.

 (make sure to start PowerShell with administrator permissions)

After the installation completes, verify that the agent is installed and properly configured to report to the JMS fleet by:

Reviewing the script output and installer logs for any errors.

You may see the host listed there after a delay of up to 30 minutes following a successful installation.

Fleet Management in JMS allows Java users to group Java Virtual Machines running in Desktops, Servers, or Cloud deployments into fleets, obtain insights into their Java usage, and manage their Java workloads. Fleet Management provides reporting and management capabilities through Oracle Cloud Infrastructure platform services to monitor and observe Java usage (on-premises or in the cloud), as well as potentially identify issues that may be present in their usage. Fleet Management reduces the challenges of inventory, stability, performance, security baseline and compliance, tuning, troubleshooting, and cost optimization for stakeholders involved in the end-to-end life-cycle of Java applications, starting with design and development all the way to production and maintenance.

		Achieving low latency in a trading system cannot be an afterthought; it must be an integral part of the design from the very beginning. While low latency programming is sometimes seen under the umbrella of "code optimization", the truth is that most of the work needed to achieve such latency is done upfront, at the design phase. We are excited to announce that Ruby’s official website, ruby-lang.org, has adopted Datadog for monitoring by <a href="https://opensource.datadoghq.com/projects/oss-program/">Datadog OSS community support</a>.

This allows us to effectively monitor the performance and availability of the site in real time for Ruby users. This key benefits of using Datadog include the following.

<h2>CDN Visibility</h2>

cache.ruby-lang.org provided by Fastly is most important infrastructure of Ruby ecosystem. Datadog enables monitoring of Content Delivery Network (CDN) performance. It tracks cache coverage, error rate, enhancing user experiences.

<h2>Unified Data Visualization</h2>

We have various web services for ruby-lang.org. Datadog allows to visualize log analytics data alongside metrics and application performance monitoring (APM) data in the same dashboards.

<h2>JIT Trace Visibility</h2>

By utilizing Datadog’s tracing capabilities, we can capture traces as requests flow through web servers and databases. This helps identify bottlenecks and problematic requests.

We published the <a href="https://p.ap1.datadoghq.com/sb/1271b83e-af90-11ee-9072-da7ad0900009-01633a8fa8c0b0c0051f1889afdf55dc">public dashboard</a> of our key metrics. We will update the dashboard as we continue to improve our monitoring especially YJIT performance.

Oracle JDK 17 was released in September 2021 and updates through September 2024 are under the NFTC. Updates of JDK 17 released after September 2024 are planned to be under the Java SE OTN license, the same license we currently use for Java 8 and 11 updates.  Similarly, GraalVM for JDK 17 remains under the GFTC license until September 2024, after which GraalVM for JDK 17 updates are planned to be under the GraalVM OTN License Including License for Early Adopter Versions.

With the release of Django 5.1, Django 5.0 has reached the end of mainstream
support. The final minor bug fix release, <a class="reference external" href="https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/stable/releases/5.0.8/">5.0.8</a>, was issued yesterday.
Django 5.0 will receive security and data loss fixes until April 2025. All
users are encouraged to upgrade before then to continue receiving fixes for
security issues.
